Shelbourne FC has appointed Keith Long as its new Academy Director, a role funded by the League of Ireland Academy Investment Programme. The former Bohemians and Drogheda United manager will oversee the strategic direction and coaching structures for all boys and girls academy teams at Tolka Park.

Long, who made 230 senior appearances as a player, brings over a decade of managerial experience to the position. His primary objective is to develop a clear and effective pathway from the academy to both the men's and women's senior squads. He will be tasked with implementing a plan to increase the number of academy graduates playing first-team football, with a specific goal of reaching 10,000 minutes for homegrown players in the senior men's team by the end of the 2025 season.

"I am delighted to be joining Shelbourne Football Club," Long said. "Our aim is to create development pathways for the players’ careers and to build upon the good work that already exists in the Shelbourne Academy."

He also highlighted the importance of the government-backed investment, stating, "Government support is a significant opportunity for the club, but success won’t simply be measured by additional staff or resources."

Technical Director Luke Byrne welcomed the appointment, citing Long's extensive experience and strong record in talent identification. "I am personally looking forward to working closely with Keith day-to-day as we aim to implement our long-term vision for the Shelbourne Academy," Byrne said. "His track record speaks for itself, and his detailed understanding of player development is exactly what we need."

Chief Executive Tomas Quinn emphasised the academy's central role in the club's long-term strategy. "Keith’s appointment is an important step in that process," Quinn stated. "His experience and understanding of the League of Ireland will be hugely valuable as we continue to strengthen the Academy."

The appointment comes as the first team prepares for a key away fixture against fourth-placed Dundalk this Friday. Shelbourne currently sit seventh in the Premier Division with 36 points from 30 games, having taken just three points from their last five matches. Following the trip to Oriel Park, Shelbourne's next fixture is a home match against third-placed Derry City at Tolka Park on Monday, October 28th. Fans can view the full upcoming schedule on the club's fixtures page.

Long's immediate focus will be on assessing the existing structures and integrating his vision, with the long-term goal of producing homegrown talent capable of impacting the senior sides. The club thanked Ministers Patrick O’Donovan and Charlie McConalogue for their support in securing the funding for this key role, which is seen as key for the future sustainability and success of the club.
