Shelbourne FC have appointed club legend Ollie Cahill as their new Head of Player Development. The move aims to strengthen the Academy's pathway to the first teams.
Cahill, a five-time league champion with over 150 appearances for the Reds, returns to Tolka Park after a 17-year playing career and 13 years with the Professional Footballers' Association of Ireland. He will focus on developing young talent to impact both the men's and women's senior squads.
"I’m excited and privileged to be at the club again and to be entrusted with this role within the Academy," Cahill said. "Shelbourne have enjoyed some great times recently and my aim is to ensure that both the men’s and women’s first teams have a strong and viable pathway."
Technical Director Luke Byrne stated that Cahill has already made a positive impact since joining the Academy setup. "He knows what it takes for a successful playing career," Byrne said.
CEO Tomás Quinn framed the appointment as part of a long-term strategy. He said it supports the club's goal of building a stronger, more sustainable route from the Academy to the first team.
Cahill's arrival coincides with the recent appointment of Keith Long as Academy Director, also announced on September 16. Cahill confirmed he will work closely with Long. "We will do everything possible to ensure that the coaches and players in the Academy are getting what they require," he said. "I look forward to working with Keith Long to look to implement the highest standards possible."
The club currently sits sixth in the Premier Division with 39 points from 31 matches, a position that reflects the team's goal of securing European football. The recent form has been mixed, with the team winning two, drawing one, and losing two of their last five league games. This run includes a 3-2 away win against Dundalk, a result that shows the first-team potential Academy graduates could join.
With key players like John Martin and Marco Untergrabner currently sidelined, developing internal talent becomes even more important for the squad's depth. The next test is an away fixture against seventh-placed Galway United on September 25, a match detailed on our fixtures page.
