Shelbourne FC Manager Praises Ajax’s Godts as Irish Side Struggles
Shelbourne FC faced a tough challenge against Ajax on Thursday night at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in the third qualifying round of the Conference League. The match ended with a 3-1 victory for Ajax, leaving Shelbourne with hope for the return leg.
The game started poorly for Shelbourne, as Ajax took control and led by three goals after just 50 minutes. Although Shelbourne managed to score once through Daniel Kelly, it was not enough to turn the tide in their favor. Despite the loss, manager John Russell found some positives in the performance of his team.
Russell acknowledged that Shelbourne had a difficult task against an excellent opponent but highlighted one player from Ajax who caught his attention: Mika Godts, the left winger. “Ajax showed their qualities,” Russell said, adding, “One of their players, the left winger, was unbelievable.”
Godts' performance was so impressive that Russell jokingly suggested he might be heading to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after this match, implying it could have been his last appearance for Ajax.
Russell also praised Shelbourne's goalkeeper Eddie Beach, who made several crucial saves and even saved a penalty from Mika Godts. “Eddie Beach was world-class today,” Russell stated, emphasizing the importance of Beach’s performance in giving Shelbourne new life and energy.
The return leg is set for next Thursday at 20:45 local time in Dublin. Both teams have a chance to progress further in the Conference League play-offs, with the winner securing a place in the play-offs.
Despite the tough loss, Russell remains optimistic about their chances in the second leg of the tie.
