Ajax's Strong Start
Ajax took an early lead with a penalty conversion from Mika Godts after Milan Mbeng fouled him inside the box. Owen Wijndal doubled the advantage just before halftime with a well-taken finish from Steven Berghuis' cross. Kasper Dolberg added a third goal shortly into the second half, capitalizing on another Berghuis assist.
Missed Opportunities and Late Consolation
Despite creating numerous chances, Ajax failed to seal the match decisively. Godts missed a penalty in the 57th minute that could have extended their lead to four goals. Daniel Kelly scored a late consolation goal for Shelbourne in the 84th minute.
The victory marks progress for Ajax under Jordi Cruijff's transfer strategy, which has brought in players with Champions League experience. Daley Blind was the only new arrival to start, while Marcos Leonardo and Julian Brandt made their debuts as substitutes but struggled to find the net.
Ajax will travel to Dublin next week for the return leg against Shelbourne, where they aim to secure a place in the Conference League league phase.
